Amalgam - My Views on Amalgam Fillings

This is the silver filling material. It has been used for over 100 years. It is made up of alloys (metals) such as silver, copper, and a small amount of mercury. When mixed it starts out soft, and then hardens within minutes. It warrants some discussion because it has been the subject of controversy since the early 1990's and a certain TV news show. Many people have been concerned about its effects on health due to the mercury content. There is no doubt that high levels of mercury are poisonous; however, in the amounts present in dental fillings it is not hazardous. We are all exposed to similar amounts in things such as fish.

Amalgam remains the longest lasting, least expensive dental filling material available. I highly recommend it for fillings in the back of the mouth due to its high durability and low cost. Amalgam fillings can last 10-20+ years. To date there have been no scientific studies that show amalgam to be unsafe. While opponents may say otherwise, there are no reliable studies to support their claim. On the other hand many reputable organizations such as The American Dental Association (ADA), The US Food and Drug Administration, The World Health Organization, The National Institute of Health, The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC),The Mayo Clinic, and most if not all, Accredited Dental Schools, fully support its use. Until it is proven to be unsafe, I will use it in my office. Please note that per the ADA, it is unethical for dentists to take out silver fillings and replace them with other materials for reasons of health.

NBC’s Dateline did a very good story on amalgam a few years ago. I have the tape at my office. If you would like to view it at one of your visits, please ask. I encourage you to do so.

Composite Resin (Tooth-colored fillings)

These fillings are essential for use on the front teeth, and for cosmetic reasons on the back teeth. Upon request I will also do these kinds of fillings on the back teeth. I fully understand if a patient wants "prettier" teeth and fillings. However, patients must understand that composite fillings take more time to complete, do not last as long as amalgam, and are more expensive. Also, some insurance programs may not cover composite resins because they are not the least expensive alternative.
